Elemental was commissioned by the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists in London in 2016 and was finally inaugurated in their premises in June 2017.
I seldomly show a work in the making, for me it destroys the magic… however when I looked back on the video created by the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists, it was remarkable to see how this piece has evolved and grown over its gestation period.
I would like to take the opportunity to thank The Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists for selecting my design and for the freedom they gave me and their belief in my vision... particular thanks go to Megan McLaren who liaised with me throughout the project.
I would also like to thank two amazing mosaic artists who worked tirelessly with me on this project… Arianna Puntin and Doina Avram.
This is a tale from mind to hands…
The idea of the circle kept coming back to my mind as it symbolises for me the harmonious wholeness which gives life to everything.
It represents Life at a microscopic scale with the atom, the human scale with the embryo and at the macroscopic scale with the planets, the sun and the universe. The circle is everywhere and in everything and exists since the beginning of time.
In my opinion, no other shape could have represented better the concept of birth and life.
The design I submitted represents the arrival of life propelled out before our eyes using two main references; the Big Bang (source of all lives) and the pregnancy wheel card (used extensively throughout the world by obstetricians and gynaecologists).
